The 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa' (In English - 'At the cross her station keeping') was in wide use by the end of the fourteen century. It was originally written in Latin. The actual author of this hymn is still in dispute. Many believe it was Pope Innocent III (d.1216) while others believe it was Jacopone dei Benedetti da Todi, a Franciscan poet and a Franciscan Friar Minor (d.1306).
The Stabat Mater has been translated into many languages and is one of few hymns that have managed to survive intact in its original Latin form. Many composers, over the centuries, have set it to music.
This hymn refers to Mary's sorrow during the Passion and Crucifixion of her Son, Jesus Christ, therefore, associating this hymn with the Stations of the Cross. It is customary to sing stanzas of this hymn while walking from one Station to the next.
Station 1
At the cross her station keeping
Stood the mournful mother weeping
Where he hung the dying Lord:
Station 2
For her soul of joy bereaved,
Bowed with anguish, deeply grieved,
Felt the sharp and piercing sword.
Station 3
Oh, how sad and sore distressed
Now was she that Mother blessed
Of the sole-begotten One!
Station 4
Deep the woe of her affliction,
When she saw the crucifixion
Of her ever-glorious Son.
Station 5
Who, on Christ's dear mother gazing
Pierced by anguish so amazing,
Born of woman, would not weep?
Station 6
Who, on Christ's dear mother thinking,
Such a cup of sorrow drinking,
Would not share her sorrows deep?
Station 7
For his people's sins chastised,
She beheld her Son despised,
Scourged, and crowned with thorns entwined;
Station 8
Saw him then from judgment taken,
And in death by all forsaken,
Till his spirit he resigned.
Station 9
Jesus, may her deep devotion
Stir in me the same emotion,
Fount of love, Redeemer kind;
Station 10
That my heart fresh ardor gaining,
And a purer love attaining,
May with thee acceptance find.
Station 11
Those five wounds of Jesus smitten,
Mother! in my heart be written,
Deep as in thine own they be.
Station 12
Thou, my Savior's Cross who bearest,
Thou, thy Son's rebuke who sharest,
Let me share them both with thee.
Station 13
Mine with thee be that sad station
There to watch the great salvation
Wrought upon the atoning tree.
Station 14
To my parting soul be given
Entrance at the gate of Heaven
And in Paradise a place.
